S. African warships placed at scene of mystery blast

January 31, 1980

The Washington Post said Wednesday that South African warships were holding secret exercises in about the same area where a bright flash occured which american scientists suspect was a nuclear explosion. The nespaper said the CIA had told a few congressional committees that the naval force was roughly in the same position as where the flash was detected Sept. 22 by a US satellite. The Post quoted a congressional aide as saying the source of the explosion could have been a rocket launched from one of the ships.
