8 states in North stand to lose US House seats

January 30, 1980

Eight states in the Northeast and North Central United States could lose a total of 14 congressional seats in redistricting because of population changes, the Census Bureau said Tuesday. The West could gain 8 of the seats and the South 6, according to bureau projections based on 1979 state population estimates.

The Census Bureau said the biggest loss would be in New York's congressional delegation, which could be cut by four. Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania could lose two each, and Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, and South Dakota each could drop one seat.
