Reflections on a rain dance

January 25, 1980

Awesome chemisty inseminates clouds. Nitrates deliver rain. Silver gashes earth green to the end of proving hard summer benign. I envy the Indians in their communion attire with the fervor of spirit fire holding up faces, bowing to earth as they dance, sing, desire. For there must follow a different kind of spell if we are to be natural, a planting not prescriptive, a seed more radical to bind and heal. Who will teach us to care, to bring rain and rainbows as far from artifice as renewal, a aggression from prayer?
