Coaches deserve better

January 24, 1980

Don Canham, University of Michigan athletic director. "I have a background in business and the sharpest guys I've met are college football coaches. They're bright and articulate -- and underpaid. I don't know of anyone anywhere running a successful business and getting $35-to-40,000. When I see history professors and mathematicians getting paid more than football coaches, who take an exam a week and are responsible for the vast crowds and the great amount of dollars they're generating, I don't think it's right."
