New production goal for China: 2-hump camels

January 16, 1980

China must breed more camels, especially the two-humped variety, the New China News Agency said Tuesday. A national camel-breeding meeting in Inner Mongolia province decided that the current total of 600,000 Chinese camels was not enough, the news agency said.

Widely used for transport in China's norther desert regons, camels are also valuable for their hair, meat, and milk. The agency said the two-humped species , also known as Bactrian camels, was more productive.
