US holds up on accepting offers of Mideast bases

For the time being the United States has ruled out accepting egyptian and Israeli offers to let american forces use their military bases in times of crisis, the State Department said Wednesday. a spokesman, Hodding Carter III, also said punitive measures by the US and other countries in retaliation for the soviet intervention in Afghanistan would continue for some time -- certainly more than a matter of weeks or months.
