Chicago sex murder trial to draw out-of-town jury

January 9, 1980

The jury that will decide the fate of accused mass sex murderer John Wayne Gacy will be chosen in Winnebago County, nearly 100 miles west of Chicago, then moved to Cook County (Chicago) for the trial. The plan, unprecedented in Illinois, was ordered Monday by Cook County Circuit Judge Louis B. Garippo in response to defense testimony indicating that pretrial publicity would prevent a fair trial with a panel of local jurors.
