Sadat, Begin complete regional-issues review

January 9, 1980

President Anwar al-Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin met for nearly two hours Tuesday, completing their review of regional issues. Subjects included Afghanistan and Iran, then thorny bilateral subjects: Palestinian autonomy, the status of Jerusalem, and normalization of relations, Monitor contributor Jason Morris reports.

A new series of disclosures by Egyptian Defense Minister Kamal Hassan Ali indicated that American planes had carried out military exercises in Egypt "during the past few weeks." The exercises served to follow up Egypt's decision to offer the United States military facilities after the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan.
