US military personnel and equipment were still engaged Thursday in relief operations following the severe New Year's Day earthquake in the portuguese Azores, Brig. Gen. Richard T. Drury, commander of US forces in the Azores at Lajes Field on Terceira Island, announced.

General Drury reassured families of US service personnel no Americans suffered serious injury or property losses. He said the mission at Lajes Field, a vital refueling point between the US and Middle East was not impaired, despite some runway damages.
