US resumes sales of arms to Taiwan

The State Department said Thursday it is resuming the sale of defensive arms to Taiwan, including sophisticated guided-missile systems. The announcement follows termination at the end of 1979 of the formal defense treaty between Taiwan and the United States. In keeping with earlier announced plans, the State Department said it will sell Taiwan about $280 million worth of weapons, including anti-tank and anti-aircraft missile systems.
