Iran, the first non-Arab country to see the effects of Egypt's uprising, saw its first protests since 2009 on Monday. Thousands took to the streets and were met by police and military forces, leading to some small clashes throughout Tehran. The US came out firmly in support of the protests that were reminiscent of demonstrations after the disputed reelection of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Before Mubarak's resignation, the Iranian government backed Egyptian demonstrators – an action that is prompting accusations of hypocrisy from those barred from protesting in Iran.
