International Women's Day: What's it all about?

Today is the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. In 1911, the first year the day was celebrated internationally, women could not vote in most countries. Today, women serve as presidents of nations and corporations.

International Women's Day on social media

The Internet is flooded with reminders of International Women’s Day and encouragement to get involved in activities that draw attention to women’s rights related activities. The Google homepage features a “Google doodle” honoring the day. Clicking on it will take you to a website, sponsored by Google, that invites visitors to “Join women on the bridge” – a campaign for women to gather on more than 200 bridges in 42 countries today in recognition of the role that women play in peace building and in war-torn areas.

On Twitter, #internationalwomensday is the No. 1 trending topic worldwide (at least as of 9:30 a.m. EST). You can also follow @womensday, the official Twitter feed for the day, which is sharing event information and relevant facts and links.
