A series of fires in northern New Brunswick in 1851, collectively known as the Great Miramichi Fire because of its proximity to the Miramichi River and the town of Miramichi, burned about 3 million acres of land and killed an estimated 160 people (more may have drowned when they tried to flee the fire by river). It is one of the largest fires ever recorded in North America.
