E. coli's economic impact on Europe, by the numbers

The European Union is planning to offer €150 million ($220 million) in aid to European farmers who have suffered huge financial losses because of last week’s E. coli outbreak. Is that enough to make up for their losses?

3. Germany

One of Germany’s largest vegetable growers said in an interview with Der Spiegel that he was losing €250,000 every day. The German Farmers’ Association estimates that the country’s 10,000 farmers have been losing €5 million ($7.3 million) a day because of the declining produce sales. The EU fresh produce association puts the economic damage at $20 million in the past week. The country’s agricultural industry makes up less than 1 percent of the country’s GDP. According to Freshfel, Germany receives more produce from other EU countries than any other country in the eurozone.
