Who is Ratko Mladic? Four key questions answered.

Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic was arrested Thursday in Serbia, more than a decade after a warrant was issued for his arrest for his involvement in the Bosnian war of the 1990s.

Mladic’s arrest happened the same day that European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton came to Serbia on a previously scheduled visit. The lack of arrest for Mladic and other war criminals has been a major obstacle to Serbia’s bid to join the EU (along with its refusal to recognize Kosovo). Whether this will speed up Serbia’s drawn-out effort to join the group is not yet clear.
