Uganda election: Four reasons donor nations won't turn their backs on President Museveni

As recent events in Egypt have shown, international support for aging despots can wane quickly once crowds hit the street and violence kicks off. Here are some reasons why the international community might not want to push Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni too hard.

3. The Lord’s Resistance Army

Once seen as an internal Ugandan problem, the murderous Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) has now become an international issue. Since Uganda launched a 2008 attack on LRA camps in Congo with the help of the Bush administration, the rebel group has butchered its way across three neighboring countries. While local armies are supposed to be helping out, it’s really only the Ugandans that have the capability to pursue the LRA. On the back of NGO pressure, Obama last year signed a law mandating his administration to come up with a plan to deal with the LRA. The eventual plan? Basically, carry on supporting Ugandan operations for now.
