For Super Bowl teams, getting there is only half the battle

The long-suffering Arizona Cardinals will make their Super Bowl debut Sunday night in Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. Even if they can't spring an upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who're aiming to become the first team to win a sixth Vince Lombardi Trophy, the Cardinals at least will have spent time on the sport's biggest stage, something five other teams still have never done – the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, and Jacksonville (Fla.) Jaguars. Of course, the Cardinals would like to win SB XLIII in their first Super Sunday appearance. But if they don't, they'll have plenty of company among teams that have been there without sealing the deal. Teams with Super Bowls on their résumés, but no victories, with the number of times each has played in the National Football League's ballyhooed championship game:

  • Buffalo Bills 4
  • Minnesota Vikings 4
  • Cincinnati Bengals 2
  • Philadelphia Eagles 2
  • San Diego Chargers 1
  • Tennessee Titans 1
  • Atlanta Falcons 1
  • Carolina Panthers 1
  • Seattle Seahawks 1
