Alysheba and Bet Twice had a longstanding rivalry, and it all began in 1987 at the Kentucky Derby. It was a tough, physical race, with horses pounding against each other from the start. Alysheba recovered after a horse slammed into him right out of the gate. Then Bet Twice got in his path, and he almost fell.

"Bet Twice ducked out in front of us right into my path," jockey Chris McCarron told ABC Sports in 2001. "Alysheba clipped his heels and stumbled pretty badly. But he was so athletic that he was able to recover his balance and surpass Bet Twice."

Alysheba went on to win the race by ¾ of a length.
