Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R) of Tennessee has introduced a bill to allow consumers to purchase health insurance across state lines. Coming a day after the House voted along near-party lines to repeal health-care reform, her bill aims to reduce health-care costs to consumers by increasing competition.

“Competition does work. We know that. And we should allow it to work for health insurance as well,” said Rep. Fred Upton (R) of Michigan, a cosponsor who chairs the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Critics say the move will gut consumer protections.
