Herman Cain speaks out: His seven most memorable one-liners

Herman Cain's ascension in the Republican presidential campaign has been rich with zingers. Here are seven of Mr. Cain's most memorable quotes.

1. The electric fence

Last weekend, Cain, hot on the campaign trail, teasingly told supporters in Tennessee that the US could benefit from a structure similar to the Great Wall of China.

“It will be a 20-foot wall, barbed wire, electrified on the top.... And I would put those alligators in that moat!”

The “alligators in the moat” idea referenced a tongue-in-cheek comment President Obama made while speaking on immigration reform in Texas in May. “They’ll want a higher fence. Maybe they’ll need a moat. Maybe they’ll want alligators in the moat. They’ll never be satisfied,” Mr. Obama said.

Cain later said the quote was in jest, and he responded to critics with another one-liner, “America has got to learn how to take a joke.”
