Stop fertilizing

Don’t fertilize plants in August unless they’re growing in containers or they're vegetables you're encouragng to produce longer. You want growth of perennial plants, shrubs, trees, and vines to slow before cold weather. You don't want them to develop lush new growth that will be killed by the cold.
