Apple to unveil new iPad Oct. 16

Apple is planning to unveil its new generation of iPads on Oct. 16, according to Re/Code. Apple is also supposed to unveil updates to its iMac line.

Apple is planning to unveil its new generation of iPads on Oct. 16, according to Re/Code, a tech blog. In Sept. Apple unveiled the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The company sold a record 10 million phones in the first weekend. 

Apple is also supposed to unveil its upgrades to the new generation of iMac products, according to 9to5Mac. The new computers are believed to have new ultra high-resolution Retina Displays, which was first introduced in 2012, and updates to iMovie and Final Cut Pro to allow editing high resolution, 4K footage. The new OS X Yosemite will reportedly be unveiled with the new computers. 

Many have questioned whether the iPad is in trouble. The Christian Science Monitor reported in July that Apple's latest earnings report that sales of iPads was down from last year. According to research firm IDC, Apple's share of the tablet market is down from 33 percent last year to 26.9 percent this year. These numbers left many wondering what is behind the iPad's decline. 

Well, according to market research firm IDC, the entire tablet market is slowing down. For example, in the second quarter of 2014, tablet shipments reached 49.3 million units, IDC reports, marking an 11 percent year-over-year growth. That's a far cry from the 51.8 percent year-over-year growth of 2013. Apple, meanwhile, saw a 9 percent decrease year-over-year for its second quarter, despite shipping 13.2 million units in the second quarter.

Analysts attribute this abatement in growth to two key reasons: 1) Consumers are keeping their tablets for longer periods of time, and 2) more people are turning to "phablets" (smart phone with large screens). 

In an attempt to bolster sales, Apple has partnered with IBM to create 100 apps for iPads and iPhones in the hopes of getting businesses to use its products.
