Enhancing your skills will make you a stronger candidate, whether it’s professional training or you just want to fine-tune your job-searching tactics by taking a seminar or reading a career book. In certain fields, candidates cannot advance without master’s degrees or specific certifications.

“You have to look at your field and see what the marketplace requires,” says Attridge.

“Education for education’s sake does not position you well with employers. They are much more interested in what you have actually done.”
