"The Children's Blizzard" writer David Laskin tells the story of his own family history in his new book. Six children were born in late-19th-century Russia and embarked on very different paths, with some heading to America, others staying in Europe, and yet others striking out for Palestine. "These people grow up as brothers and sisters and end up having these completely different lives," Nelson says of the group. "It's really about how the time and place shapes you."
