Sarah Palin's heroes – and antiheroes

2. Abigail Adams vs. Betty Friedan

Palin praises Abigail Adams' "brilliant, insightful mind."

"You go, girl," Palin says, writing of the second first lady of the US. "The more I read about Abigail, the more she became a hero to me." She also credits Adams' letters to her husband with offering "the best insights into the role the family was meant to play in the new republic." Betty Friedan, on the other hand, epitomizes for Palin the women who view their families as holding them back. She quotes a Friedan reference to the family as "a comfortable concentration camp."
