What's on TV
Sunday 4/7
Celine Dion: A New Day Has Come (CBS, 8-9 p.m.): After a two-year absence from the spotlight, the Canadian singer is back with a special that includes Destiny's Child and Brian McKnight. She talks about her new son, René-Charles, her new life, and other star-studded subjects. She sings beautifully such favorites as "Beauty and the Beast," "Have You Ever Been In Love," and, of course, "My Heart Will Go On" from the film "Titanic."
Moby Dick: The True Story (Discovery Channel, 9-10 p.m.): Herman Melville's great American novel was based on a true story. But the true story is more tragic than the novel an 85-foot whale sinks a whaling ship and the remaining crew must try to survive 90 days of terror on the open seas.
Bleacher Bums (Showtime, 8-10 p.m.): Based on a play by Joe Mantegna, Dennis Franz, and nine other actors from the Organic Theatre Company in Chicago, the story concerns fervent baseball fans who show up daily to root for and bet on a perpetually losing team. Some are obsessive and stupid about gambling. But the tale is really about their devotion to the game and their bumbling attempts at relationships. The first 40 minutes would work better on stage, but the real meaning of the story lies in its last half hour. Peter Riegert stars.
Requiem for Frank Lee Smith (PBS, check local listings): "Frontline" investigates the tragic tale of Smith, who spent 14 years on Florida's death row before he was exonerated of murder. DNA testing arrived too late. He died 10 months before being proved innocent.
Gilmore Girls (WB, 8-9 p.m.): Fans of the show will want to watch tonight as mother Emily (Kelly Bishop) and daughter Lorelai (Lauren Graham) visit a spa and find that they have more in common than they realize.
American Celebration at Ford's Theatre (ABC, 9-10 p.m.): President and Mrs. Bush are the guests of honor for the 22nd annual bash in support of the Ford Theatre in Washington the theater where President Lincoln was shot. Kelsey Grammer hosts, and Stevie Wonder, Yolanda Adams, magician David Copperfield (in a funny routine with a duck), and cute actress/singer Kristin Chenoweth make for a charming variety show.
