Keeping Track: Fireworks spending

Americans spend a lot of bucks for their bangs

The United States imported $101 million worth of "C class" fireworks last year - small, "over the counter" explosives such as firecrackers, Roman candles, and sparklers - according to the US Census Bureau's foreign-trade division.

Back in 1990, before the government changed the way it tracks categories, total fireworks imports stood at $61 million. That figure included the commercial-grade fireworks fired off by American cities and towns.

The American Pyrotechnic Association estimates 90 percent of fireworks used in the US comes from China.
