Empty seats in the boardroom

North American demand for senior executives (defined as those earning more than $150,000) soared during the second quarter this year, climbing 26 percent over the comparable 1998 quarter, according to a recent global study.

Korn/Ferry International, an executive-search firm, says the United States is driving this increase in demand because of its long-running economic-surge and the resulting increase in high-level jobs.

The sector leading the boardroom boom: high-technology (including internet companies), which overtook the traditional leaders - industrial companies and financial-service companies - for the first time.
