Social responsibility investment (SRI) funds generally avoid companies active in tobacco, gambling, weapons production, animal testing, and alcohol, and several beat* or neared returns on the S&P 500 (4.99 percent) for the first quarter.

*Allegiance Fund says it gained 6.83 percent, but SocialFunds recorded a 1.1 percent gain and was unable to account for the discrepancy at press time.
