Worth Noting on TV

The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo (Nickelodeon, 3-5 p.m., check local listings) Nick in the Afternoon features a week-long marathon of their original detective series for kids. Irene Ng ("The Joy Luck Club") stars as Shelby, an overeager teen who uses her job as a clerk at a police station to crack cases that have the Cocoa Beach, Fla., police stumped. In addition to solving crimes, Shelby has to tackle problems Philip Marlowe never faced. For example, how do you hold an all-night stakeout when your curfew is 11 p.m.? Kids can sleuth right along with Shelby: A computer screen pops up during the program to review clues and suspects as Shelby tracks down her man. For gore-free, good-natured fun, tune in "The Mysteries Files of Shelby Woo."

Nothing in Common (Cinemax, 6-8 p.m.) Spend an evening with two-time Oscar-winner Tom Hanks. The night kicks off with a bittersweet drama costarring Jackie Gleason as Hanks's estranged father. Skip the unfortunate adaptation of Tom Wolfe's bestselling satire of New York in the 1980s. Bonfire of the Vanities (8-10 p.m.) also stars Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith. Saving the best for last, the evening concludes with the 1994 Best Picture, Forrest Gump (10 p.m.-12 midnight). Tom Hanks won Best Actor for his portrayal of a slow-witted man living through some of the fastest-paced events of this century in this whimsical tale directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (ABC, 8:30-9 p.m.) The Archie comic book character makes her TV debut. Melissa Joan Hart ("Clarissa Explains it All") stars as a teenager trying to live a normal life despite her magical powers and the best efforts of her aunts Zelda (Beth Broderick) and Hilda (Caroline Rhea) to turn her into a proper witch. In the premire, Sabrina accidentally turns the most popular girl in school into a pineapple and has to seek help from guest stars Penn and Teller and Deborah Harry to undo the spell.
