In a Page 1 story on March 29, daily edition, the Monitor misreported an incident that took place in Canberra. The visiting US official was not Secretary of State Warren Christopher. Rather the incident involved a US delegation that included Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbot, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Winston Lord, US Ambassador to Australia Ed Perkins, and aides, according to the US Embassy and Australian press reports.

Also, Prime Minister Paul Keating did not accompany the delegation into Parliament. According to Australian sources, Mr. Keating had to make his way through a gathering of angry loggers, followed shortly by the US officials. Both Australian analysts and the press interpreted this as an embarassment for Keating. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Keating was ''furious'' as he walked past the loggers, but this could not be confirmed.
