THE PAPER (R, MCA/Universal Home Video). This comedy-drama directed by Ron Howard focuses on a day in the life of a New York City newspaper. Michael Keaton is engaging as the harried metro editor trying to make sure his tabloid gets the story du jour right: Did two boys arrested for a heinous hate crime really do it? Both helping and hindering his efforts are his zany staff, his pregnant wife (Marisa Tomei), and the paper's frugal managing editor (Glenn Close). Robert Duvall gives a memorable performance as the editor who keeps them all in line. A suspenseful climax neatly ties up all the loose ends in this entertaining but occasionally gritty film.
