WORTH NOTING ON TV

The Cronkite Report: Lessons for the Future (The Discovery Channel, 10-11 p.m.): There's something reassuring about tuning in to a documentary series and finding that Walter Cronkite is host - a feeling that you must be in the right place. It's not just the credibility he's earned during his long TV career, but the reasonable tone his solid hosting style has added to important recent shows, like A&E's ``Ape Man.'' This time Cronkite's duties involve a hard but hopeful look at the much-troubled, much-covered field of American education.

The latest edition of the series for which he serves as host and commentator shows viewers the effective steps some educators have taken to deal with deep-seated problems.

An early-intervention project in North Carolina has changed the lives of very young children. In Massachusetts, middle-school kids govern their own microcosm of society. Teenagers in South Central Los Angeles are getting a boost from a humanities-based teaching program.

They may be small steps, but they point to some interesting solutions.

* THURSDAY

Jubilee Concert (A&E, 9-11 p.m.): One of the most revered orchestras in the world - the Vienna Philharmonic - marked its 150th anniversary in 1992 with a sparkling musical celebration of the kind many feel is unique to this institution.

North American viewers will now get their first chance to see the concert. Guest conductor Riccardo Muti leads the orchestra in Schubert's Symphony No. 7 in B Minor and his ``Unfinished Symphony,'' Beethoven's ``Coriolan Overture,'' Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 (the ``Italian''), and Ravel's popular and inescapable ``Bolero,'' a work Ravel himself said he never intended to be the classical-music mainstay it has become.

The featured guest, opera star Christa Ludwig, performs Mahler lieder. And it all takes place in the Philharmonic's splendid home, the Musikvereinssaal in Vienna.
