ACCOUNTING FIRMS GENERATE MORE JOBS

Public accounting firms' demand for new college graduates with accounting degrees should remain steady until at least the end of the decade, says the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) in New York.

``Large, medium, and small public accounting firms will generate a total demand of between 20,000 to 25,000 jobs each year until the year 2000,'' says Rick Elam, AICPA vice president of education.

``These figures could climb even higher as accounting firms offer a greater variety of services,'' Dr. Elam adds.

The AICPA's survey also shows that for the first time since the 1987-88 school year, there were more female than male accounting graduates.

COMPUTER SALES TO CONSUMERS RISING RAPIDLY -- NORWELL, MASS.

The consumer market for personal computers reached record levels in 1993 and is poised for greater growth in the years ahead, according to a study by BIS Strategic Decisions in Norwell, Mass.

Customers bought 2.7 million PCs in 1993, up from 2.3 million in 1992. Consumer purchases of PCs are expected to increase to 5.9 million by 1997, one-third of which will be for home use.

Three factors help ensure that consumer interest in PCs will continue to expand: retailer support for PCs; improved, easier use; and more knowledgable consumers, says Raymond Boggs, director of home office research for BIS.

TELEPHONE COMPANY HELPS SAVE THE EARTH -- BOSTON

A new long-distance telephone service, ``Earth Tones - The Environmental Phone Company,'' claims that subscribers can help save the planet with every long distance call.

Earth Tones, owned by a coalition of nonprofit environmental groups, gives 100 percent of earnings to environmental campaigns. Organizations such as Earth Day 2000 and the National Environmental Law Center started Earth Tones as a benefit.

Earth Tones, which prints its bills on recycled paper and sends environmental information with each billing statement, maintains that it can save customers about 5 to 10 percent off the base rates of the leading carriers.
