One hundred and four hours after

the September thirtieth earthquake in India

a nineteen-month baby girl

is found alive

under her overturned cot

deep beneath the rubble of her home

in the village of Killari.

For life is a metaphor.

There are dreams too old to sleep through;

there are lives too young to still;

there are cries of innocence in us

too deep to ignore.
