Angel Messages

YOU are about to step off the curb to cross the street. Something says, ``Wait!" You stand still and a car comes speeding around the corner; you realize you have been protected from harm. Most of us have had similar experiences. To me, the ``something" that speaks to us is an angel message.

Angel thoughts appear often in the Bible; they played an important part in the birth, life, and work of Christ Jesus. In her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, describes angels as ``God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality."

I once heard an angel message--even though I didn't recognize right away that it was an angel message! But as a result, I found a deeper meaning to the Bible promise in Isaiah ``And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear." I'd heard another Christian Scientist call this Bible verse God's telephone number. He said it was always a local number and the line was never busy. I liked that idea very much and have used it many times when turning to God in prayer.

At the time, my two young grandsons were staying with me. I had given them permission to go to a friend's house to play. After they left the house I sat quietly praying, listening for God's guidance, as I often do. The words ``underneath are the everlasting arms," from Deuteronomy, came to my thought over and over again. About half an hour after the boys had left, the telephone rang. It was the friend's mother calling to tell me that one of my grandsons had fallen from a tree and had badly injured his le g. Even as I was listening to her, I was hearing the same angel message that had been coming to me before she called. I knew that God had already answered, and I was completely certain that right where the boy had fallen, there were the everlasting arms of divine Love, God.

I thanked her and immediately went to get the boy and bring him home. I assured his friend's mother that he would have the best of care. When we arrived home I prayed earnestly and listened for God's guidance.

After getting him settled in the bathtub to clean him up, I went into the next room to continue praying. I have no idea how long I was there before I became aware of hearing someone singing. It was coming from the bathroom. There was a very happy boy in the tub, and I knew all was well. He didn't do any walking that evening but was very active playing marbles on the floor. The next day he went to school and wasn't even limping.

I have thanked God through the years for many proofs of His care. Mrs. Eddy tells us in The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany: ``Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee."

A friend of mine once shared these thoughts with me: ``God is talking to me, and I do hear Him and am obedient to His voice. God is talking to man, and man does hear Him and is obedient to His voice. God is talking to the world, and the world does hear Him and is obedient to His voice." How wonderful it is to know God is guiding us. All we need to do is listen for and obey His angel messages!
