WORTH NOTING ON TV

SUNDAY

The American Experience (PBS, 8-10 p.m.): This rewarding series begins its fifth season with a two-part, four-hour documentary called "The Kennedys." In his introduction, historian David McCullough says he was skeptical when he learned the show was to be still another look at this political dynasty, but the approach turned out to be "very different," he goes on to say. It considers individual Kennedys as aspects of `a family unit, a tribe, a combined force,' with individual stars like John or Robert or T ed seen as functions of a unified whole. Close students of PBS will recognize the production style: clips, voice-overs, and quotes skillfully spliced together at an almost anxious pace, as if otherwise you'd lose interest. (Part 2 airs Monday, 8-10 p.m., followed on succeeding days by complementary re-airings of the documentaries `LBJ' and `Nixon.')
