Monarch on Milkweed

A monarch butterfly moves its bright wings against the pale flower

of the milkweed, closing and unfolding the outlined, orange planes,

tasting the flower nectar, the scented summer honey, testing the west wind.

A summer of delight? Or, from worm to fluttering wings, preparation for its final flight?
