33 MILLION OWN BIKES IN THE US

In the United States, 29 percent of adults - 33 million - own a bicycle, with 18 percent owning one they bought new, according to a survey by National Family Opinion Research for Bicycling magazine.The survey of 150,000 households shows that the US bicycling market has a median age of 35 with 24 percent of those having household income of $50,000 or more. Sixty-eight percent of the bike-owning households own two or more bicycles; 18.5 percent will buy another new bike in the next two years. The air pump is the most popular accessory. It is owned by 53 percent of the market, followed by locking devices with 48 percent. Only 16 percent own helmets. The most popular bike color is blue.
