CHINESE CITY DWELLERS GETTING POORER, NEWSPAPER SAYS

The average urban Chinese was nearly three percent poorer in the first half of 1989 than in the first half of 1988, an official paper said Tuesday. The English-language China Daily quoted a survey of 30,000 families in cities as showing average income per head was $28 per month in the first half of this year, 22 percent higher in cash terms but 2.6 percent down after adjustment for inflation.
