OLIVER NORTH'S TRIAL PROCEEDS - WITHOUT REAGAN TESTIMONY

The defense began its case yesterday in the trial of Oliver North, after being dealt a heavy blow last Friday when Judge Gerhard Gesell rejected its plea that former President Reagan testify before the jury. ``There has been no showing that President Reagan's appearance is necessary to assure Colonel North a fair trial,'' the judge wrote.
