Below, where a soft, blowing wash of mist has changed the city into rows of light that tremble, blot away, return, persist though softened, changed to general shapes, the sight bemuses us to see it all as myth -- lit Christmas trees, tradition's many forms enlarged, abstracted, metaphoric, with our thoughts packed full of current Christmas norms. But morning brings the houses back to view, the real people in the outpoured sun, their inner generosity made new by Christian thought, not yet outdone by commerce. Here recalled conception lifts the heart, makes up, heaps up true Christmas gifts.
