Still life in winter

Oh who that ever lived and loved Can look upon an egg unmoved? --Clarence Day The bronze grizzly (our campus centerpiece) holds a hard-boiled egg between his jaws where the prankster left it on his way to Math 105. An Irish setter waits tethered to a fire hydrant, a locked bicycle chained to the fence is missing the front wheel. A child (blond curls, books in backpack) stands tiptoe, reaches between harmless claws. She turns the egg in slow contemplation, lifts it high. It remains an egg. Carefully, she pushes it back in place, tightens the red stipes of her knitted scarf, and dances the next five steps home.
