VOA to expand operations in five countries

The Voice of America has signed agreements to expand or improve its operations in five countries - Sri Lanka, Morocco, Thailand, Costa Rica, and Belize - as part of a $1.5 billion program to reach territories where its signal is jammed or nonexistent, according to the New York Times.

The five- or six-year modernization program, approved by Congress in fiscal 1983, would increase the number and effectiveness of the transmitters and seek to expand the number of languages used in broadcasts from 42 to 60.
