7 states appeal EPA ruling that denied acid-rain curbs
Seven Northeastern states appealed a decision by the Environmental Protection Agency refusing to order air pollution reductions in seven Midwestern states upwind of them. The EPA had denied their petition to curb pollution from Middle Western and border states.
Granting the petition would have required the EPA to impose emission controls on Midwestern power plants and other sources of air pollution, including sources of acid rain. The Reagan administration strongly opposes such a course, saying more tests are needed to determine the source and effects of acid rain.
