US seeks end to teacher ban on N.Y.C. parochial schools

US Solicitor General Rex Lee urged the Supreme Court Wednesday to overturn an appeals-court ruling that would prevent the New York City Board of Education from assigning public school teachers to religious schools to conduct remedial instruction.

The program is based on a 1965 federal law that directs special assistance to low-income families. The law allows the participation of private as well as public school students.
