Security tightened in Warsaw during funeral mass for priest

Police stepped up patrols in Warsaw as an estimated 50,000 Poles attended an outdoor mass for a pro-Solidarity priest who the government says was abducted and possibly killed by three security officers.

Divers searched the Vistula River and a reservoir for the body of the kidnapped priest, the Rev. Jerzy Popieluszko, after a police interrogation of his three alleged abductors. One of the detained men said he threw the priest into the Vistula near Torun, where the kidnapping occurred Oct. 19. Two others said Fr. Popieluszko was dropped into a reservoir at Wloclawek on the banks of the river northwest of Warsaw.
