Reagan counters Mondale on 1980 grain embargo

President Reagan disputed Walter Mondale's version of where he stood on the 1980 grain embargo, in remarks prepared for an appearance at College of Du Page on Tuesday. Mr. Reagan said Mr. Mondale supported the grain embargo President Carter imposed against the Soviet Union after its invasion of Afghanistan. Mondale has said he privately opposed the embargo and advised Mr. Carter it would not work. The embargo was extremely unpopular among farmers.
