Another boycott: Soviets skip model airplane contest

The Russians are staying away, but model-airplane enthusiasts from 24 other nations are coming to an old bomber base here for the world control-line flying championships this week.

''The Russians are always strong in control-line flying,'' said Geoffrey Styles, public relations director for the 93,000-member American Academy of Model Aeronautics. ''They are pros, and they always win. But they don't like us this year, and they are boycotting our championships as well as the Olympics.''

Poland and Hungary are sending teams, as is China.
