US psychiatric group attacks release of mental patients

State mental hospitals are discharging tens of thousands of patients into unprepared communities, the American Psychiatric Association charged Wednesday. The group called for a nationwide drive to reach out to these people with programs to provide food, shelter, clothing, and treatment. Mentally ill street people are said to be 25 to 50 percent of all the homeless in America.
